Metal stud framing, drywall and soundproofing in Montreal

Metal studs, drywall, suspended ceilings and soundproofing of walls and floors, for offices, retail stores and dwellings, under direct contract or as a subcontractor for other contractors.

Drywall & soundproofing

Metal studs, drywall partitions, suspended ceilings and sound insulation for offices and retail stores, under direct contract or as a subcontractor for general contractors.

Interior systems are the non-load-bearing part of the building: the partition framing, the drywall, the ceilings and the acoustic insulation. They give an office or a store its layout, its acoustic comfort and its finish.

Our interior systems services

We work for owners and property managers, and as a subcontractor for other general contractors.

Metal studs

Light galvanized metal studs that form the partition framing. Straight and stable, they suit adaptable offices, clinics and stores that will evolve. Layout according to the plans, tracks, studs, blocking for door frames, bulkheads and soffits.

  • Galvanized steel
  • Blocking
  • Soffits

Drywall partitions

Drywall on one or both sides, in one or more layers, depending on the assembly required: regular drywall, moisture-resistant for wet rooms, or type X for the fire separations shown on the plans. Cut-outs and coordination with the other trades.

  • Regular
  • Moisture
  • Type X

Suspended ceilings

A metal grid hung from the structure with removable tiles: the ceiling hides the ducts and wiring while keeping them accessible, and integrates the light fixtures and ventilation diffusers.

  • Grid
  • Tiles
  • Mechanical access

Soundproofing

Sound insulation in the cavities of partitions and ceilings, matched to the stud depth (3 5/8 in. or 6 in.). Final performance depends on the complete assembly: layers of drywall, sealed joints, treatment of openings.

  • Acoustic insulation
  • Partitions
  • Ceilings

Taping and finishing

Tape, several coats of compound and sanding for a uniform surface, then primer and paint. It is the most visible step: we do it with care, protecting floors and existing surfaces.

  • Tape and compound
  • Primer
  • Paint

Subcontracting for general contractors

From your plans, your schedule and your site instructions. Work not provided for in the contract is the subject of a separate written offer, prepared after a visit and a review of the plans, with the applicable administration fees. Quantities validated by the architect when needed.

  • Priced extras

Three common situations

What our clients most often trust us with in interior systems.

  • Fit-out

Reconfiguring an office or a store

New partitions, a suspended ceiling, integrated lighting: we carry out the architect's plans and coordinate with electrical and ventilation.

  • Acoustic comfort

    Reducing noise between two spaces

Meeting rooms, clinics, dwellings: the acoustic assembly defined in the plans is installed with the insulation, drywall layers and sealed joints it calls for.

  • Contract extra

A site instruction to carry out

A general contractor receives an instruction during the contract: we visit, price it in writing and carry it out within their schedule, without delaying the job.

Why choose Construction AIM

A subcontractor who knows a general contractor's constraints, because it is one.

  • A subcontractor who speaks your language: as a general contractor ourselves, we know site instructions, extras and schedule constraints.
  • Everything in writing: a detailed offer, quantities and conditions; no work is done before signing.
  • A company in good standing: RBQ licence, CNESST compliance and wages at CCQ rates.
  • Offices that keep running: dust partitions, noise management and coordination with the occupants.

Words you will hear on site

Interior systems vocabulary, as it is used on Quebec job sites.

Metal stud
A cold-formed steel partition frame onto which the drywall panels are screwed.
Drywall installation and taping
Installing the drywall panels, then finishing the joints with compound, ready for paint.
Suspended ceiling
A ceiling hung from the structure on a grid, which hides the ducts and gives access to services.
STC
Sound Transmission Class (ITS in French). The higher it is, the better the partition or floor blocks airborne noise.

Frequently asked questions

Do you work as a subcontractor for other general contractors?

Yes. We do metal stud, drywall, suspended ceiling and soundproofing work for general contractors, from their plans and site instructions.

How do you handle work outside the contract?

Each extra is the subject of a separate written offer, based on a visit and the plans. Quantities can be validated by the architect, and nothing is carried out before it is signed.

Is sound insulation enough to eliminate noise?

It reduces part of the noise, but performance depends on the whole assembly: layers of drywall, sealed joints, doors and openings. For a specific acoustic target, the assembly is defined in the plans by the project's professional.

Can you work in occupied offices?

Yes. We install dust partitions, protect the entrances and plan the noisy phases with you to limit the impact on your operations.

What soundproofing does the Code require between two dwellings?

The National Building Code, applied in Quebec through the Construction Code, requires walls and floors separating two dwellings to reach a sound transmission class (STC) of at least 50, or an apparent STC (ASTC) of at least 47, which takes adjoining construction into account. The Code sets no requirement for impact noise, such as footsteps: an IIC of at least 55 is often recommended for occupant comfort. Source: Cecobois and FPInnovations, based on articles 5.8.1.1 and 9.11.1.1 of the NBC 2015.

How much does this work cost?

Our prices are based on the current wage rates of the Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ), set by the collective agreements for the sector concerned (residential, institutional and commercial, industrial), plus the materials and equipment specific to each job. Every quote is free, detailed and prepared after a site visit.

Metal or wood studs for a partition?

Metal studs are straight, light and non-combustible: they are the usual choice in offices, retail stores and institutional buildings. Wood remains common in residential work. For soundproofing, the framing matters less than the complete assembly: insulation, number of drywall layers, resilient channels and sealed joints.
